5/13/2023 0 Comments Bitter Orange by Marshall MooreThe Assembly Chamber was used occasionally to host balls to honour celebrities. The House of Assembly was the scene of many bitter debates and struggles between the Governors and the members of the Assembly. This two storey brick structure was constructed around 1762. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1925 leaving only the main eastern facade and the stables. In 1838, the proclamation of the abolition of slavery was read from the steps of King's House. This building formed the first unit of the civic square designed in the then popular Georgian style. The Hall was demolished in 1761 to make room for the new mansion. In 1762, a new official residence for the Governor, King's House, was erected on the site of the Old Spanish Hall of Audience. The Emancipation Square is generally acclaimed to be the most impressive of its kind in the West Indies. Spanish Town still possesses memories of the past with its many historical buildings. When the English captured the island in 1655, Spanish Town remained the capital of the island until 1872 when this status was conferred on Kingston. It was the capital of Spanish Jamaica from 1534 to 1655. The town is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica. It was first known as Villa de la Vega, later St. Spanish Town, built by the Spanish after Sevilla Nueva (New Seville) was abandoned, dates from 1534. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longganisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block…Ĭontent Warning: fatphobia, drug abuse, evidence planting, police intimidation, (implied) domestic violence, racism, fatphobia/ableism/misinformation about diabetes* With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant and has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. The first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishes-one that might just be killer. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Coral reefs by jason chinSome points need further clarification and two pages of informative back matter help, offering technical diagrams describing the relationship between the algae and the corals, as well as concerns about the future of coral reefs. Through the use of panels and changing perspectives, Chin maximizes the drama of reef life while the straightforward text packs in basic information including the structure of a reef and the concept of a food chain. With book still in hand, the girl observer floats through this fantastic world, which is skillfully illustrated with vivid, arresting views of the fragile habitat. As she becomes absorbed in it, coral starts to sprout around her and the photo realistic illustrations begin to transform into the watery world of the reef. A young girl pulls a replica of this very book off the shelves in the magnificent reading room of the New York Public Library. Using a fantasy framework similar to that in Redwoods (Roaring Brook, 2009), Chin offers a colorful and inventive introduction to coral reefs. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Monkey taming by Judith FathallahThank you! Ĭatalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson The 10pm Question by Kate de Goldiīorn on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammett (non-fic) I need loads more! If you have any you recommend, please add to the comments. Here are the topics to cover and a very few book ideas of my own. The topic must also be a major part of the book, not simply have a fleeting mention. The books must be well-written, with good review coverage (by which I do not just mean Amazon reviews but reviews from school librarians and other responsible agencies) and have been written within the last 15 years if possible. (And a few non-fiction books, IF they are written specifically for teenagers.) I’m asking for your help! At the back of my teenage stress guide, as well as useful websites, I want to include novels that tackle each of the topics my book covers. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The headmistress by milena mckay”The Headmistress” by Milena Mckay is an age gap ice queen lesbian romance with a magical whim surrounding Dragons, involving Magdalene and Sam, two women at different stages in life and having different ages, who even though they seem worlds apart, they share more than just their attraction for each other, mainly the salvation of Dragons. It is definitely unique in lesfic to have a novel about a beautiful ice queen of a headmistress who comes to rescue a century long lasting exclusive academy called the Three Dragons and fall for one of the teachers, in a spiderweb of situations and a complicated plot which explores the main characters and leads them towards the highest peaks of their development. I have been expecting a book like this for a long time, being an ice queen age gap lesfic lover and a sucker for amazing plots. 5/13/2023 0 Comments La Celestina by Fernando de RojasBoth servants -Pármeno (Jordi Mollà) and Sempronio (Nancho Novo)- are not satisfied with the rewards supplied by Celestina and demand more from her. After Celestina convinces Melibea of Calisto's love and manages a brief clandestine meeting between them, Calisto gives Celestina a valuable gold chain. However Calisto's other servant Parmeno is suspicious of Celestina, as he knows about her tricks. She was once a prostitute, and now she dedicates her time to arranging discreet meetings between illicit lovers, and at the same time uses her house as a brothel for the prostitutes Elicia (Candela Peña) and Areusa (Maribel Verdu). She uses people's greed, sexual appetite which she helps create, then provides means to satisfy, and love to control them. The sorceress Celestina is the owner of a brothel and in charge of two young employees. As he uses the old procuress Celestina to start an affair with Melibea, an unmarried girl kept in seclusion by her parents. Calisto's servant Sempronio suggests they get the intriguing Celestina (Terele Pavez) to further the romance. It deals with a young nobleman, Calisto (Juan Diego Botto), who falls in love for Melibea (Penélope Cruz), the daughter of a rich trader. Based on the novel considered to be one of the greatest works of Spanish literature, and traditionally marks the end of medieval literature and the beginning of the literary renaissance in Spain. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Room novel by emma donoghueThe Canadian Library Association named it as an Honour Book in their Canadian Young Adult Book Award. And because I knew this one was set in the aftermath of Ireland going bust - a topic that’s only now just emerging as a common thread in Irish fiction - I was eager to read it, hence my search for it on foot (and then online). I have a long relationship with Tana French, having read (and loved) In The Woods, The Likeness and Faithful Place. Not one shop had it in stock and I had to resort to buying it from Amazon as a Kindle edition. I read it back in July, within a week or two of its release, after I’d trawled every independent book store near Charing Cross Road looking for it. Last week Tana French‘s Broken Harbour won the Crime Fiction Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards. Fiction – Kindle edition Hodder 544 pages 2012. |
