5/13/2023 0 Comments Dead to Me by Cath Staincliffe![]() ![]() ![]() At first, the match seems to have been made somewhere considerably lower than heaven, but when a teenage girl is found brutally murdered, stabbed to death in her squalid flat on a North Manchester housing estate, both detectives realize they must work together to stop a vicious killer. Their commander thinks Rachel's intuition could make her a great cop, but has reservations about her shoot-first-think-later approach, so she partners her with Janet. Rachel Bailey couldn't be more different―she's energetic, impulsive, and ambitious, and has just been transferred to the Manchester murder squad. She's put in the time and seen it all, but has no desire for the boss's job―she loves her own too much. A riveting, sharply observed and thoroughly modern police procedural, Dead to Me features a stellar but unlikely female detective team.ĭetective Constable Janet Scott is subtle and reliable, a diplomatic thinker with a wry sense of humor. ![]()

![]() ![]() His story didn't match up to her own understanding of how Black people treated each other, noting that his own people are who sold him into slavery. By translating his words into this phonetic dialect, she captured the essence of his enslavement while leaving his dignity intact.īut you could also feel how much his existence and his story plagued how she felt about her own Blackness. ![]() This version of a slave narrative is less haunting than others I've read but felt more grounded. Her introductions and descriptions of Cudjo's mannerisms fascinated me the most. I found this short book captivating and Hurston's style of writing illuminating. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments As you wish book cary elwes![]() ![]() And of course, much of this book is really a dedication to Andre The Giant who really was a gentle giant and sadly passed away in his 40's. ![]() Cary talks about his first discussing and eventually taking the part with Director, Rob Reiner and first encounters meeting all his co-stars, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap) and Mandy Patinkin. However, this evidently was short-lived and thought maybe it was time.Īs You Wish did not disappoint and reaffirms how special this film really is, even for those who starred in it. However, I may have pushed back reading it as, like most nostalgic memories, one didn't want to be disappointed or learn that some of the cherished characters were actually petty squabbling during filming. This book, by Actor, Cary Elwes, who plays Westley, an Errol Flynn dead ringer, (Robin Hood Men in Tights and Saw fame), was in my to-read list for quite some time. ![]() Many hours of my younger days were spent watching and re-watching a taped VHS copy of this film, until I could quote many of the lines, perhaps better than the actors themselves □ You'll laugh, cry, fall in love with gentle giants and swashbuckling pirates. You may already be one of the lucky few who've seen this cult classic if you haven't, I would suggest you remedy that presently as you wish. Like many others with any kind of sense of humour, I count The Princess Bridge amongst one of my most favourite childhood films, based on William Goldman's incredible novel by the same name. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments The meet cute diary![]() ![]() Noah quickly realizes that dating in real life isn’t the same as crafting idealized meet cutes. Roman Catholicism has been outlawed by the government, and to be a priest is an act of treason, which is why he is the last one remaining. As The Power and the Glory begins, an unnamed priest arrives at a river port in Tabasco in hope of escaping the Mexican state government that wants him dead. It was the 1941 recipient of the Hawthornden Prize and in 2005, was named one of the hundred best English-language novels of the last century by Time magazine. The conversation began after New York Magazine podcaster Hannah Rosin tweeted, “So Fire Island gets an F- on the Bechdel test in a whole new way,” citing the lack of female characters in the queer AAPI reimagining of Jane Austen’s “ Pride & Prejudice,” aside from Margaret Cho’s mother hen onscreen persona. “ Fire Island” ignited a viral Twitter debate on June 7 over gender representation, but now the Bechdel Test creator herself, Alison Bechdel, has issued the last word. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Book review code name helene![]() ![]() Lawhon carries us into the heart of the French resistance, with the beautiful Auvergne region covertly transformed into a gritty battleground, and into the mind of a badass heroine with uncanny instincts who takes on the Nazis and men’s arrogant sexism with uncommon bravado.
