Roman Catholicism has been outlawed by the government, and to be a priest is an act of treason, which is why he is the last one remaining. As The Power and the Glory begins, an unnamed priest arrives at a river port in Tabasco in hope of escaping the Mexican state government that wants him dead. It was the 1941 recipient of the Hawthornden Prize and in 2005, was named one of the hundred best English-language novels of the last century by Time magazine. It has also been adapted into a stage production (1956) and TV adaptations (19). ![]() ![]() It was adapted into a 1947 film, retitled The Fugitive, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda. ![]() Controversial and condemned by the Roman Catholic Church at the time, it went on to become one of Greene’s most enduring works. It is based on Greene’s experiences in Mexico during the time periods where he saw the repressive atmosphere first-hand. The Power and the Glory explores themes of faith, freedom, penance, and the human quest for dignity. Centering on a renegade Roman Catholic priest known as a “whiskey priest” for his moral failings, the story takes place in the Mexican state of Tabasco during the 1930s, when the Mexican government was attempting to suppress the spread of the Catholic Church. British author Graham Greene’s novel The Power and the Glory (1940), named after the doxology often recited at the end of the Lord’s Prayer, was also published in the United States under the title The Labyrinthine Ways. ![]()
